NPCA is the caretaker of 43 conservation areas within the Niagara Peninsula watershed held in public trust for recreation, heritage preservation, conservation, and education. These natural and shared greenspaces marry nature, culture, and adventure to create limitless opportunities for discovery.

Summary of Duties
As a Program Associate, Communications & Public Relations with NPCA, you will support both community engagement and communications activities for a major coastal resilience initiative along Lake Ontario.
Working as part of a collaborative project team, you will assist in delivering public engagement activities while also supporting communications, marketing, and content development related to the project. This role offers hands-on experience in environmental communications, public outreach, and community-based project delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Program Associate – Communications and Public Relations will assist in developing, implementing and evaluating communications and marketing plans and strategies to address departmental and organizational communications needs for external audiences.

This role will support NPCA’s brand by promoting a positive image of the organization and help to monitor and update its website and social media channels.

  • Support the planning and delivery of public engagement activities, including open houses, community pop-ups, and outreach events
  • Engage with residents, shoreline users, and community members to share project information and gather feedback
  • Assist with on-site event coordination, including setup, materials distribution, and participant support
  • Conduct outreach along Lake Ontario shoreline areas to raise awareness and encourage participation
  • Support the development and execution of communications materials related to the project
  • Write and edit content for web, social media, newsletters, and project updates
  • Assist in developing social media content and supporting NPCA’s digital presence
  • Support updates to the project website and online engagement platform
  • Assist with the implementation of surveys and other engagement tools (online and in-person)
  • Document community input and assist in summarizing engagement findings
  • Support the creation of promotional materials (e.g., posters, handouts, digital assets)
  • Attend events and represent NPCA as an ambassador in the community


Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Environmental studies, geography, planning, or a related program
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to engage confidently and professionally with members of the public
  • Interest in environmental issues, climate change, and community engagement
  • Experience with social media, content creation, or digital communications is an asset
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with photography, video, or graphic design is considered an asset
  • Good understanding of digital programs and platforms (Microsoft Office, Adobe, Buffer, etc.)
  • Must be able to work safely in accordance with NPCA’s Health and Safety Policies
  • Must possess a valid Ministry of Transportation Class “G” driver’s license

Location: NPCA Main Office - 3350 Merrittville Hwy, Thorold, ON; with travel within the watershed
Salary: $18.00 - $18.50/hour up to 35 hours/week
