STATEMENT REGARDING SIGNAGE AT BEAMER MEMORIAL CONSERVATION AREA

JULY 29, 2025 UPDATE

Recognizing the needs of our visitors, NPCA will be reopening one side of the washroom facility at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area, as an all-gender washroom, starting July 29.

As a preventative measure, a monitoring sign will be installed near this washroom to discourage vandalism. We hope visitors can be reminded that damaged spaces will impact everyone. Unfortunately, if vandalism continues to occur, NPCA will reassess next steps.

As mentioned, staff have initiated the early stages of developing a comprehensive management plan for Beamer, and the future of amenities like washrooms will be explored through this process. While we recognize the importance of providing adequate visitor support, we also want to ensure decisions are informed by thoughtful planning and meaningful community engagement.

JULY 18, 2025

Thank you to those who reached out regarding the signage at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area. We recognize the “No Trespassing” sign caused some confusion, and we apologize for the concern it may have caused.

Following two incidents of arson at the washroom facility and based on advice from police, signage was added to deter vehicle access beyond the trailhead gate, not restrict access to the trails or green space. Still photo cameras have been installed to monitor the parking lot and outside the closed washroom.

While we recognize the language of the sign caused confusion, trail visitation data indicates there was no decline in public use of the site during this time. The existing signs were removed and will be replaced with clearer messaging focused on protecting park infrastructure and preventing after-hours misuse.

Staff are initiating the process of developing a new management plan for Beamer Memorial Conservation Area. This will include a review of signage across the site, and we look forward to inviting the community to participate in the process. Thank you for your continued support and care for Beamer Memorial Conservation Area.
