THOROLD & NPCA INVITE VOLUNTEERS TO COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING AT LAKEVIEW CEMETERY

City of Thorold and Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority invite volunteers to participate in community tree planting at Lakeview Cemetery

The City of Thorold and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) are seeking volunteers to participate in a community tree planting at Lakeview Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023.

Volunteers will plant a variety of native trees and shrubs in the north end of the cemetery, adjacent to an existing mature forest. The new trees and shrubs will complement the existing species in the area, creating healthy, functioning habitats that offer significant ecological, economical and social benefits.

“We are grateful to the NPCA for their partnership and guidance in growing the city of Thorold’s tree canopy,” says Councillor Tim O’Hare. “The addition of these trees and shrubs will foster healthy and sustainable natural habitats for animals and species inhabiting the area, while also enhancing the serene and natural ambiance for those who have lost a loved one and are visiting the cemetery. We extend a warm invitation to interested residents and community members to join us in this meaningful community initiative.”

This tree planting marks the second phase of a two-day collaborative effort between the City of Thorold and NPCA. The initial planting session occurred in late September, with support from students from Niagara College’s Ecosystem Restoration program, who collectively planted around 300 trees.

The native trees and shrubs being planted at the cemetery include white cedar, white pine, white spruce, silver maple, black maple, red maple, dogwood, elderberry, black walnut, basswood and black currant, amongst others.

The Oct. 28 tree planting will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude when all the trees and shrubs have been successfully planted. Those interested in participating are invited to sign up by emailing volunteering@npca.ca.
