NPCA Marks Year One of Lakewood Conservation Area Restoration with Key Milestones, Supported by Niagara Community Foundation Funding

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) has completed year one of the three-year Lakewood Conservation Area restoration project. This multi-year environmental initiative focuses on restoring critical Great Lakes habitat to support wildlife, migratory birds, and at-risk species. By enhancing biodiversity, engaging the community, and monitoring progress, the project aims to create self-sustaining ecosystems for long-term conservation and climate adaptation.

Ongoing efforts to protect and restore the natural environment at the site focus on invasive species management, native plant restoration, and shoreline protection. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to enhance biodiversity and maintain the ecological health of the property.

In 2021, NPCA announced the purchase of 70 acres on Morgan’s Point Road in Wainfleet. The new land, now known as Lakewood Conservation Area, was one of the first parcels of land secured as part of NPCA’s strategic plan and subsequent land securement strategy.

The long-term conservation and protection of the site's ecology, along with the re-establishment of functional and self-sustaining ecosystems, is a top priority. The restoration project is expected to be completed by 2027 with the support of key funding partners.

The NPCA gratefully acknowledges the financial support of Niagara Community Foundation’s Environmental Grant Program in the amount of $47,000, which has been instrumental in initiating the restoration and enhancement efforts at Lakewood Conservation Area. This funding began the restoration of six hectares of wetland habitat and improvements along 160 meters of Lake Erie shoreline. With these resources, NPCA was able to manage invasive species, plant native trees and vegetation, and implement nature-based shoreline solutions to protect and sustain the ecological integrity of this valued area. The support provided has been crucial in advancing our commitment to environmental stewardship and fostering the long-term health of this invaluable ecosystem.

Key initiatives completed to date:

  • Invasive Species Management: Twenty non-native, invasive plant species have been mapped across the property to guide ongoing management and minimize their impact.
  • Native Plant Restoration: In fall 2024, 316 native trees and shrubs were planted, and 142 native wetland plants were added to enhance biodiversity and support wetland ecosystems.
  • Shoreline Restoration: Three natural sand fences were constructed along the shoreline to stabilize dunes and improve shoreline resilience.
  • Bird Monitoring: Volunteers conducted a breeding bird survey in spring 2024 to monitor bird populations and inform management practices.
  • Community Engagement: A Shoreline Clean-Up event in March 2025 involved local volunteers in removing debris, contributing to the area’s environmental health.
  • Educational and Research Initiatives: Niagara College Environmental Restoration students participated in research and monitoring, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of nature-based shoreline restoration techniques.

Looking ahead, NPCA will:

  • Continue invasive species management and planting efforts, with a focus on spring tree and shrub planting.
  • Prepare for a fall planting event to further enhance the site’s biodiversity.
  • Create a small seasonal wetland to support wetland-dependent species.
  • Proceed with ongoing shoreline restoration efforts to ensure long-term site resilience and ecological health.
