The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) is a community-based natural resource management agency that works to protect, enhance, and sustain healthy watersheds. With 60 years of experience, the NPCA offers watershed programs and services that focus on flood and hazard management, source water protection, species protection, ecosystem restoration, community stewardship, and land management.

The NPCA is one of 36 Conservation Authorities in the Province of Ontario. With 41 Conservation Areas within the Niagara Peninsula watershed, the NPCA manages lands that are held in public trust for recreation, heritage preservation, conservation, and education. These natural and shared greenspaces marry nature, culture and adventure to create limitless opportunities for discovery.

Summary of Duties

The Program Associate – Communications will work with the Strategic Business Planning and Public Relations Team to support communications and marketing strategies, while also promoting environmental stewardship within the watershed and fostering positive relationships with the public.

This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and candidates must be between the ages of 15-30 and eligible under this program: have Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency or Refugee Protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; have a valid social insurance number; and be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Program Associate – Communications will assist in developing, implementing and evaluating communications and marketing plans and strategies to address departmental and organizational communications needs for external audiences. This role will support NPCA’s brand by promoting a positive image of the organization and help to monitor and update its website and social media channels.

  • Support the team in the execution of strategic communications and marketing initiatives.
  • Assist with writing stories, blogs and newsletters, as well as researching and gathering information for press releases and other public-facing materials.
  • Participate in the creation of social marketing content and promotional campaigns.
  • Assist with multi-media products around various projects (design, web, photography/video, digital materials).
  • Identify opportunities for positive media coverage, facilitate content research and support media monitoring.
  • Provide marketing and promotions support for NPCA events and projects, including managing social media presence and creating written and multi-media promotional materials.


  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or a related program
  • Experience with web design and digital media
  • Extensive social media experience
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills
  • Good understanding of digital programs and platforms (Microsoft Office, Adobe, Buffer, etc.)
  • Must be able to work safely in accordance with NPCA’s Health and Safety Policies
  • Must possess a valid Ministry of Transportation Class “G” driver’s license

Location: NPCA Main Office - 3350 Merrittville Hwy, Thorold, ON; with travel within the watershed

Salary:  $17.50/ hour (35 hours per week)
