WELLAND, Ont. (August 17, 2018) –The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) is pleased to announce its new Water Quality Improvement Grant Program (WQIGP), which makes grant funding available to different organizations looking to complete projects that improve water quality, and habitats within the Niagara Peninsula Watershed.
“This program is going to go a long way to support our water quality improvement efforts by allowing us to partner with different organizations who satisfy the criteria. As we continue our one million trees and three million native plants initiative, it is important that we are making sure that there is a land care and maintenance component as well,” said NPCA CAO Mark Brickell. “I am excited to see the creative and important projects that will come out of this program.”
According to the 2017 Water Quality Monitoring Program Report on surface water, the biological and chemical monitoring results indicate that most of the Niagara Peninsula’s watersheds have poor or impaired water quality.
This new program is designed to help partner agencies with their water quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing measurable water quality parameters. Specifically, the WQIPG aims to improve total phosphorus, turbidity, connectivity, dissolved oxygen, and water temperature, which have been identified to be significant contributors to the impairment of water within the Watershed.
“Launching new programs like the Water Quality Improvement Grant is a great example of NPCA building partnerships with agencies throughout the Niagara Peninsula watershed to improve water conditions in a sustainable way,” said NPCA Chair, Sandy Annunziata. “Conservation is a shared responsibility, and this program will enable us to continue to expand opportunities for partnerships all while ensuring the health and resiliency of our Watershed.”
